i've found it extremely interesting in my researches for this blog the last four years to discover what a high percentage of the artists of all stripes that i've written about are gay. and even more of whom's behaviors suggest it though i could find nothing in print.

i've just chosen a very few of their faces; read the list on the right for many, many more.

thanks, yoli; yes. looking forard to the time when this becomes just another thing you know about another person.

There is a wonderful book "The Red Rose Girls" that chronicles the domestic and professional lives of Jessie Wilcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green, and Violet Oakley. One wonders what the reaction of the public and their publishers would have been if the reality of their personal lives had been known. Howard Pyle must have been a brilliant instructor to have guided their careers so successfully, though clearly they were all so talented that they probably would have succeded regardless. I would love to have been one of his students. Another, much lesser recognized, female illustrator who studied with Howard Pyle at the same time is Charlotte Harding - her work is lovely. Debra

thanks, debra --i'll have to check her out.

yes, i read much of the several books on the red rose girls (see them being watered in the bottom photo-- a replication of the poster on the back wall of which i could not find my copy). that's how i learned about their private lives.

one wonders indeed, but.... they would have wondered about quite a number of their 'stars' and, given that many were making no secret of their homosexuality, gertrude stein, isadora duncan, maybe there was a different kind of acceptance then.... ? nah.... oscar wilde saw the inside of a jail cell.
